I didn't know all the answers when I asked them all, but now I believe I do. If you think otherwise, let's discuss it sometime; I still don't feel like my belief in the correctness what follows is unyielding.</div> <div class="update">The first play is scored FC 5U RBI. Kemp gets an RBI despite making the third out of the inning, a rare occurence. Sandoval throwing on to first would not accomplish anything -- the inning ends when the third out is made, and throwing on to first would occur chronologically after Loney was tagged. (Some sources think that this is stupid, and I think so as well, but as far as I can tell that is what the rules say.)</div> <div class="update">Here's where things get a little weird though -- an appeal play is inserted into the chronology of the play. And if the third out of an inning is made on the batter-runner, no runs would score. So if the Giants could just make an appeal on Kemp, then the run would be taken off the board. The problem is that an appeal cannot be initiated (as far as I am aware) until the play is dead. I do not think that Sandoval throwing over to first constitutes an appeal. But if Kemp were to give up on the play (as in the second hypothetical situation), then the Giants could appeal to first and get the run taken off the board. So, in short, Kemp has infinite time to run to first; if he recuses his right to first base, the Giants could nullify the run.</div> <div class="update">The second play as it happened is the rare "sac fly double play." The run does count, as doubling a guy off a base is a timing play (i.e., occurs in real time). This is not a well-known fact! It seems like it should be some sort of force out, but it does not behave like a force. Score it SAC 9-4-3 DP RBI. It is, I think, the only way that the batter can hit into a double play and be credited with an RBI.</div> <div class="update">The first hypothetical is the classic fourth out play. The appeal is inserted into the chronology of the play, and because the men left early before the run scored, the third out occurs before the run and the run no longer counts. Supposing the pitcher appealed the play to the second baseman, the scoring would be 9-4-3-1-4 DP. (Or maybe 9-1-4 DP?) Torres would be counted as left on base at first; he was never put out in this scenario.</div> <div class="update">The defense recuses its right to appeal once all its infielders have left the field. (This is part of Rule 7.10d.) The play would stand as originally ruled in the second hypothetical. <div class="update">In the third hypothetical, passing a runner puts the passed runner out immediately, so Renteria would be the second out of the inning, and Sanchez's fly ball would end the inning. This is assuming something extremely bizarre didn't happen, where Renteria correctly tags up, and is passed anyway by a speeding Torres who blows by him between second and third. In that case you'd have to have an umpire paying attention to which happens first, the runner getting lapped or the run scoring. In almost no sane scenario would Renteria be passed first. A passed runner is scored as a fielder's choice with the nearest fielder receiving the putout, so it would go in the books as F-9, FC 6. Notice though that even if there were nobody out and there was a triple play made in this way (with Renteria lapped, Torres doubled off, and Sanchez flying out), the run would still score, just like in the original play.</div> <div class="update">In the last example the third out is made on appeal, and it is inserted into the play before the catch is made, so all three outs have been recorded before the run scores. The scoring would again be something like 9-4-3-1-4.</div> <div class="update">The relevant rules governing these situations are, foremost, 7.10; besides them I think 7.12 and the notes following rule 4.09 in the official rulebook are germane. <hr height="1" width="50%" align="center"> <a name="fourthout"></a> <div class="datestamp">10 July 20, tu: 2.40p &nbsp; <font class="keyword">keywords: fourth out, baseball 01</font></div><br> <div class="update">I'm going to try to reclaim this space for some less weighty thoughts. We'll start by talking about baseball.</div> <div class="update">Two plays occurred in the span of three innings in the Dodgers game last night that are worth reviewing. Both were strange in their own right, but each become even wackier with the addition of some hypotheticals. Pencils up, there will be questions afterwards.</div> <div class="update">First play. Bottom of the sixth, Dodgers trailing 4-1 but threatening with Jamey Carroll on third and James Loney on second with two out and Matt Kemp batting. 1-2 count on Kemp. The infield is playing back and Carroll has a mammoth secondary lead. Kemp hits a ground ball to third baseman Pablo Sandoval, and the runners are off. Sandoval comes forward and fields the ball in the baseline, and Loney shows some poor baserunning to run right into the fielder. Sandoval tags Loney out for the third out of the inning. Carroll ran hard the whole way and reached home plate before Loney was tagged out. Because the third out of the inning was a tag play, the run scores. (The Giants protested and video seemed to show that in fact the tag occurred first, but the run did wind up counting.)</div> <div class="update"><b>Question.</b> How is this play scored?</div> <div class="update"><b>Hypothetical situation.</b> Suppose Sandoval knew the run had scored before Loney was tagged, but he also knew that if he recorded the out on Kemp without tagging Loney, the run would not have scored. What if he does both, then? If he tags Loney, sees the run has scored, curses, and then throws on to first and gets Kemp for the fourth out. Does this affect the scoring? If so, how?</div> <div class="update"><b>Hypothetical situation #2.</b> Suppose Kemp sees the third out is made on Loney and assumes the inning is over and trots back to the dugout without touching first base, and the Giants appeal to first before leaving the field. Can they do this? If so, clearly Kemp is thrown out at first for the fourth out, but does this affect the scoring? If so, how?</div> <div class="update">Second play. Top of the eighth, Giants leading 4-2 and ready to crack it open with the bases loaded and one man out: Ishikawa on third, Edgar Renteria on second, Andres Torres on first, and Freddy Sanchez batting. Sanchez hits a fly ball to right field. Ishikawa and Renteria go back to tag, but Torres does not know how many outs there are and starts running. He discovers there is only one out when he gets to second base and finds one of his teammates there -- Renteria gives him a "What in the world are you doing here??" look. (The Dodgers later argue that Torres in fact passed Renteria on the basepaths; more on this later.) Torres runs back toward first. The ball is caught, and the other two runners tag. Ishikawa scores. The throw is cut off by the second baseman, who fires to first and doubles off Torres. Ishikawa crossed the plate before the ball made it to first.</div> <div class="update"><b>Question.</b> How is this play scored? Does the run count?</div> <div class="update"><b>Hypothetical situation.</b> Suppose one of the baserunners left their base early. (It could be either Renteria or Ishikawa, but let's say it was Renteria.) After Torres is put out for the third out of the inning, the first base coach yells for the players to appeal the play, and the pitcher engages the rubber and lobs over to second base. The umpire indicates that Renteria did in fact leave early, and a fourth out is recorded. Does this change the scoring? If so, how?</div> <div class="update"><b>Hypothetical situation #2.</b> Suppose a fan notices that Renteria left early, but the Dodgers don't, and as they're running off the field the fan is yelling for them to appeal at second. The Dodgers have almost completely left the field -- the last man to come in is the left fielder. A second player comes out of the dugout and goes over to the rubber, engages it, and throws to him to appeal the play. Is this scenario different from the first hypothetical? If so, how?</div> <div class="update"><b>Hypothetical situation #3.</b> Suppose, as video replay suggests, that Torres did in fact pass Renteria on the basepaths. The umpire notices this, but the play finishes as it otherwise did. How is the scoring affected?</div> <div class="update"><b>Hypothetical situation #4.</b> Suppose Torres in fact makes it back to first base to avoid being doubled up, but failed to re-tag second base as he sprinted back around the bases. The Dodgers then have to appeal, as they only have two outs. Now there is no question that the run has scored before a third out is made, but Torres is out at second on appeal. Does the run count? How is this scored?</div> <hr height="1" width="50%" align="center"> <div class="datestamp">10 June 28, m: 3.25a</div><br> <div class="update">In two sentences today I ruined something very, very beautiful.</div> <hr height="1" width="50%" align="center"> <a name="ferry"></a> <div class="datestamp">10 April 24, sa: 10.15p &nbsp; <font class="keyword">keyword: ferry</font></div><br> <div class="update">I meant to post this a while ago.</div><br> <div style="text-indent:80px"><font size="-2">75</font> &nbsp;<b>the ferry</b></div> <div style="text-indent:100px;font-size:8pt">10.04.12, m: 12.07p</div><br> <div style="text-indent:100px">three minutes from the end i buried my fear <div style="text-indent:100px">and closed my eyes to search for a calming peace. <div style="text-indent:100px">deep breaths led me away; i felt sleep coming on. <div style="text-indent:100px">suddenly the door burst open. i opened my eyes. <div style="text-indent:100px">she stood there, panting, not contrite <div style="text-indent:100px">that the force of her entrance put a hole in the wall. <div style="text-indent:100px">i adjust the bed so that i'm sitting up, <div style="text-indent:100px">careful to keep my wrists hidden under the covers. <div style="text-indent:100px">the evidence on them would damn me in this court. <div style="text-indent:100px">"why?", she yells, grabbing the collar of my shirt <div style="text-indent:100px">and shaking me. wires fell indiscriminantly to the floor. <div style="text-indent:100px">"why don't you love me?" <div style="text-indent:100px">i couldn't open my mouth, for there is no answer <div style="text-indent:100px">that could satisfy the venomous intent of its posing. <div style="text-indent:100px">just then the peace i sought searched me out <div style="text-indent:100px">and it was even okay not to fashion a clumsy reply. <div style="text-indent:100px">of course i love you, sweetheart: that i never doubted it <div style="text-indent:100px">is all i need consider to convince myself. <div style="text-indent:100px">my ticket had been stamped now, and i boarded the ferry; <div style="text-indent:100px">with one strong push of the pole i lost track of the shore. <hr height="1" width="50%" align="center"> <a name="valentine"></a> <div class="datestamp">10 February 12, f: 10.30p &nbsp; <font class="keyword">keyword: valentine</font></div><br> <div class="update">A colon and a blinking cursor.</div> <div class="update">After the accident that was all that was left of her.
